This section provides links to innovative work or outcomes-focused work that is going on in community colleges that may be of interest to the CLIPs. Some are about general approaches in community colleges while others are links to community colleges that may have some innovative practices in the specific area of one of the CLIPs.
Learning College Project
The League for Innovation in the Community College (www.league.org/welcome.htm)
began a project in 2000 called the Learning College Project (www.league.org/league/projects/lcp/)
which was intended to provide guidance for colleges as they began to move to a
more learning centered approach. This project identified 12 colleges to be
Vanguard Colleges. The Vanguard Colleges would be committed to a learning
centered approach and would serve as models of best practice to other colleges.

Solutions to Problems and Issues
“CCD has defined learning outcomes at the course, program, and institution
level. All courses are competency based, with expected learner outcomes
identified. All certificate and degree programs have identified exit
competencies (outcomes). The institution determines annual goals, which this
coming year will have measurable outcomes attached to them. ...”

Assessment of Learning Project
“’If there is one generalization that can be made about the culture of the
academic community, it is that unusual value is placed on acquiring and
using information. To refuse, in principle, to investigate the results of
our own actions because such an inquiry is deemed somehow inappropriate is
to display inconsistency of the highest order—a fact not lost upon those
outside higher education. Like any investigation, assessment involves vast
technical difficulties and undreamed subtleties. However, difficulties and
subtleties have hardly stopped us in other areas.’ –Peter Ewell ...”

Learning Outcomes
“1. At what levels (course, program, institution, other) have learning
outcomes been identified and defined at your college?
Learning outcomes are primarily identified and defined at the course and
program level. General education learning outcomes have been defined for the
institution, but no institution-wide assessment of these learning outcomes
is occurring at this time. ...”

Assessment Strategies
“In May 1994, a North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA)
self-study group was assigned the task of assisting Moraine Valley with
developing its Assessment of Student Academic Achievement (ASAA) plan. The
objective of the assessment plan was to demonstrate that the college is
effectively meeting its stated mission and purpose. To achieve this
objective, a collegewide effort was initiated to document the extent of
student academic achievement. Self-study group membership, included both
full- and part-time faculty from all academic divisions, Student Development
staff, Institutional Research staff, and a student. In its initial meetings,
the group learned about ASAA and how Moraine Valley Community College will
incorporate ASAA into the work of the college's Institutional Effectiveness
Task Force. ...”

- Richland College (TX)
Project Description
“Richland College is a Teaching, Learning, Community-Building institution.
The learning needs and expectations of students and community—as well as
work-related needs of colleagues—inspire and animate our work. To this end
we unite to provide the highest quality learning environment.
The words, "Teaching, Learning, Community-Building" have been used to
capture the core of Richland College's vision and statement of purpose for
more than twenty years. In fact, these words have been strategically placed
at the entrance of every door to the college as a reminder to all who enter.

Core Competencies
“The faculty of Valencia Community College have established four Core
Competencies that describe the learning outcomes for a Valencia graduate.
They are: THINK, VALUE, COMMUNICATE, ACT. These general competencies can be
applied in many contexts and must be developed over a lifetime. They specify
how learning can be expressed and assessed in practice. They enable students
and faculty to set learning goals and assess learning within and across the
many disciplines of human inquiry. Use the descriptions and examples of
academic work for each to measure your own learning outcomes. Samples of the
academic work are great additions to your Learning Portfolio. ...”

Learning Centered Reference Guide
“This little book is meant to foster discussions around teaching and
learning. Language has power over how we view and frame our actions, and the
chief benefit of a reference guide is to establish a shared vocabulary so
that we can communicate our meanings to each other more clearly. The key
metaphor here is "Learning-Centered," which simply places the desired result
of teaching, i.e., learning, at the center of conversations. The concepts
defined in this booklet reflect a developmental perspective on learning: the
understandings of the definitions are evolving and will be refined through
practice and dialogue. This tool is intended to support and enhance
college-wide discussion of learning and the scholarship of teaching. ...”
