Dr. Ruth Stiehl provided training concentrating on program level SLOs and program mapping.  Copies of her books and an enlarged mapping tool for use while mapping your own program can be obtained from Bonnie Suderman.

Norena Badway Workshop

          June 8th, 2005

Dr. Norena Badway presented a full-day workshop on the Assessment Cycle, emphasizing how to choose a starting point for the SLO cycle, writing SLOs, and starting to plan effective assessments.  She especially stressed the importance of “closing the loop”, or using the data to make improvements in instruction, curriculum, or student services.  Groups were able to work together to develop an assessment plan for one course or program. Mary Allen Workshop

    August 18th

Dr. Mary Allen presented a full day interactive workshop that started by covering the basics of the assessment plan as a review.  She then provided valuable information on the steps to implementing various tools as well as their pros and cons. Tools included in this workshop were published tests, locally developed tests, embedded assignments, portfolios, surveys, interviews, focus groups, and rubrics.

A group of BC and Delano students made a presentation based upon what instructors do to help or hinder student learning.  This was based upon a statewide student focus group in which they participated at Lake Tahoe.  The students have been asked to present this information at several conferences in the upcoming year.

Portfolios

    March 8, 2006

This Campus Conversation included an overview of portfolios, their strengths and weaknesses, and steps to setting up a system.  Presentations were made of currently used portfolio systems by Ann Tatum and Denise Mitchell of English (course level portfolios) and Bernadette Towns of Child Development (program level portfolio system).

Capstone Projects

March 22, 2006

Capstone projects were featured in this Campus Conversation.  Presentations included an overview of the process to develop capstone projects and presentations by Tom Moran (ASL), John Gerhold (Music), and Chef Coyle (Culinary Arts).

Surveys

March 23, 2006

This Campus Conversation included a description of surveys as well as steps to develop effective surveys and pitfalls to avoid.   Clark Parsons presented the REMARK system for survey development and results tabulation.

Rubrics

March 29, 2006

Clark Parsons presented steps to develop rubrics as well as an overview of different rubric styles.  Brenda Freaney and Sheena Bhogal presented the English 60 rubric and discussed their example of a norming packet.
