CHARTER

CHARTER ICONName
Bakersfield College Archives Association is an affiliate of the Bakersfield College Foundation with purposes, limitations, and obligations set forth in the charter.

Mission
The Bakersfield College Archive Association was established to create, collect and maintain the historical records of Bakersfield College and to make that information accessible to the public.

 

Objectives
To collect, house, store, and make accessible valuable historical information, data and memorabilia related to Bakersfield College, from its founding date in 1913 to the present.

This information includes, but is not limited to:

  • mission and objectives of the College, including historical changes.
  • administrative records, including organizational charts, plans, projects, and minutes.
  • faculties, including numbers, demographics, and eminent achievements.
  • students, including demographic and statistical records, and notable achievements of current and former students.
  • instructional programs, including historical shifts in offerings.
  • facilities, including history, concept plans, and campus maps.
  • leadership achievements of presidents, faculty, staff and students.
  • athletic achievements, including conference and State championships of outstanding athletes and coaches.
  • memorabilia collected and contributed by the staff.
  • histories of College organizations (e.g., the Alumni Association, the Foundation, Senates, and the Associated Students).
  • catalogs, yearbooks, newspapers, and other publications.
  • histories and other accounts written by staff.
  • video and film material germane to the history of the College.
  • use photographic collections related to any of the above.
  • use professional techniques to catalog, digitize (as possible), store, and make accessible the archival records of the College.
  • develop and implement standards for archival collection.
  • clearly identify and make known the types of information and data desired.

Guidelines for accepting archival material will be developed by the Steering Committee and implemented by the Director.

Organization
The Bakersfield College Archives Association will be directed by a Steering Committee appointed by the President of the College. This Steering Committee will be composed of current and former staff members and students of the College, including the current Director of Archives, and chaired by a member appointed by the President of the College. The Steering Committee will meet on a regular basis upon the call of the Chairperson.

The Archive Director shall be appointed by the President of Bakersfield College, and shall be a member of the professional staff. Desirable background for the Director may include training in history, libraries, or in archival collection.

Efforts will be made by the Steering Committee and Bakersfield College to support the Director with competent clerical assistance to organize and categorize archival material. In addition, the College will be asked to provide part time student help.

The Director shall also be supported by a Volunteer Coordinator who will recruit and direct volunteer help for the archives effort, and serve on the Steering Committee.

Efforts will be made to enlist the assistance of the Academic Senate, the Associated Students, The Classified Senate, the Foundation, and the Alumni Association to support the Archive Association with materials and financial assistance.

FACILITY
The College will provide an appropriate and secure facility to house the Archives (See the menu link "Visit Us"). The College will strive to provide office equipment, cataloging software, furniture, and appropriate storage space.

FINANCE
The Archives Association will be initially financed by Bakersfield College and the Bakersfield College Foundation.

It is the intent of the Archive Association to solicit and raise funds under the aegis of the Bakersfield College Foundation to augment institutional support. In addition the Archive Association has requested developmental assistance from the Foundation during the start-up years.

The Steering Committee and the Director will take steps to explore and apply for appropriate grant sources for additional financial help.
