Digital Arts - Photography

ART B16 Introduction to Digital Photography (3 units)

This course is an introduction to the possibilities of digital photography. Topics covered include: digital cameras, scanning, printing, color management and file management. Students create original images for use in class and explore photo manipulation with raster software. A suitable digital or film camera is required. Recommended: Reading Level 5 or 6, ART B20 or equivalent. Hours: 54 lect, 54 lab. CCS: Liberal Arts and Sciences. Transferable: CSU and private colleges. Note: Elective credit only.

ART B17ab Elementary Photography (3 units)

B17a-B17b (1.5-1.5) equivalent to B17ab. In this black and white photography course, students study the basic principles of cameras, optics, light, film, film development, exposure, exposure meters and enlarging. Photographic quality, exploration of the photographer’s environment, and personal expression is emphasized. A suitable 35mm film camera is required. Recommended: B17a: Reading Level 5 or 6. ART B17cd Intermediate Photography (3 units)

B17c-B17d (1.5-1.5) equivalent to B17cd. This course in black and white photography is a continuation of ART B17ab. Students review and refine their photography skills, with an emphasis on personal expression. A suitable 35mm film camera is required. ART B17gh Advanced Photography (3 units)

B17g-B17h (1.5-1.5) equivalent to B17gh. This course is a study of black and white photography in an area of specialized and personal interest. Advanced work is done in camera technique, darkroom practices and studio lighting. Students create technically proficient work of an expressive and original nature. A suitable 35mm film camera is required. Recommended: ART B17cd with a grade of “C.” Hours: B17gh-108 lect/lab. Field trips required. Offered: F, S. CCS: Liberal Arts & Sciences. ART B18ab Individual Projects in Photography (2 units)

B18a-B18b (1-1) equivalent to B18ab. Students in this course receive special instruction in preparation for professional experience. Students strengthen their graphic visualization and technical skills through challenging individual assignments. Students work much more independently than in the foundational photography courses. Digital Arts - Graphic Design

ART B20 Introduction to Digital Arts (3 units)

This foundational course introduces vector art and the principles and elements of two-dimensional design. Students create original design solutions and learn the basics of the Apple Macintosh computer. Recommended: Reading Level 5 or 6. Hours: 54 lect, 54 lab. CCS: Occupational Education. ART B21 Graphic Design (3 units)

This is a course in design with an emphasis on printed communication. Through concept development, type, and images, students create original design solutions. Identity and branding development is introduced. Recommended: ART B20 and Reading Level 5 or 6. Hours: 108 lab. CCS: Occupational Education. Transferable: CSU and private colleges.

ART B22 Digital Illustration (3 units)

This course introduces digital art for editorial, technical, scientific, and informational publication. Emphasis is placed on problem solving and the importance of concept development, from rough draft to finished solution. Typography is considered as an integral element to illustration projects. Prerequisite: ART B20 or equivalent. Hours: 54 lect, 54 lab. CCS: Occupational Education. Transferable: CSU and private colleges.

ART B23 Advertising Design (3 units)

This course focuses on the design of advertising. Through concept development, type, and images, students will create original advertising solutions. A broad survey of advertising media will be explored. Recommended: ART B20 and Reading Level 5 or 6. Hours: 108 lab. CCS: Occupational Education. Transferable: CSU and private colleges. ART B24 Digital Imaging (3 units)

This course introduces raster art as used in commercial media. Through a series of projects, students create original artwork, and refine their design skills. Processes such as painting, masking, layering, color correcting, separating, and effects filtering are covered. Image creation, scanning, editing, compositing, re-touching, and problem solving are explored. Recommended: ART B20 or equivalent. Hours: 54 lect, 54 lab. CCS: Occupational Education. ART B25 Typography (3 units)

This course focuses on effective and original letterform usage in visual media. Students create typographic design solutions and explore the evolution of letterforms from ancient to contemporary.
