Announcements for Physical Science 12 Fall 2014 

Welcome Fall Semester Students.

For the Fall Semester Students, you can now go to my CONNECT page for the class link needed to register for the online homework. The textbook may not be available yet at the BC Bookstore.  If you get your book somewhere else and need to buy the CONNECT passcode online, you can do so using the instruction on my CONNECT page.  I do have some textbooks on reserve in the BC Library that you can borrow for up to one hour at a time.

You should read completely and carefully the Preclass Info link off of my main webpage, my syllabus and the CONNECT links ASAP and begin the class right away.  You should check the web page often for timely and important information related to the class.

Test 1 (Chapters 1-5) Tuesday 9/23 in Lecture. Please sit every other seat.  Please write your name and section number on your Scantron (Form 882) and your test booklet. You may write on the test booklet but NOT on the periodic tables.  No leaving room until you have finished the test. You may use your textbook and notes. All cell phones and other electronic equipment, except calculator, should be turned off and stored out of sight. No sharing of calculators or any other test materials. Please put all non-test materials on the floor or on a seat next to you.  No baseball caps or other eye shield material.  Please keep your hands away from your eyes.  Please keep your papers covered and keep your eyes on your own papers.  Any indication of cheating will result in a zero for the test.  Overall grades should be posted on the internet under "Grades" according to student number by late afternoon after the test.

National Chemistry Week (sponsored by the American Chemical Society 10/20-10/23.  Extra Credit Poster Contest.  You can earn up to 10 extra credit points by making a poster 11x17 inches (no larger) on the theme of "The Sweet Side of Chemistry-Candy".  The number of extra credit points will be determined by the professional appearance and content of the poster (no hand writing or drawing).  Poster will be due by 5:00 pm Tuesday 10/21 in SE12.  Your name and CRN number must be written on the back of the poster.  You can also earn up to 3 extra credit points by voting for your favorite with a valid reason written on the ballot along with name, class, instructor and section number.  Posters will be displayed on tables in the hallway outside of SE12.  Ballots will be available on one of the tables.  Voting will start on Tuesday 10/21 8:00 am and end on Thursday 11/23 by 4:00 pm.  Winners of the student vote will win flash drives.  You can view past winners off my main webpage as well as look at the ACS Chemistry Week webpage at: http://portal.acs.org/portal/acs/corg/content?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=PP_TRANSITIONMAIN&node_id=1033&use_sec=false&sec_url_var=region1&__uuid=7fe1e6e9-b538-45a5-9a76-957224d6809b

Thursday 11/27 Thanksgiving Holiday-No Lecture or Lab

Week  of 4/22  American Chemical Society Celebration of Earth Day 2013 (4/22).  Extra credit for the class can be obtained by making a poster 11x17 inch (no larger) promoting the theme, “Energy-It’s Everywhere!” and receive up to 5 extra credit points.  Neatness (no hand writing) originality and professional look will be criteria for the extra credit points.  Materials to give you ideas will be available from the instructor in advance.  You can check the ACS Earth Day website at http://portal.acs.org/portal/acs/corg/content?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=PP_TRANSITIONMAIN&node_id=1034&use_sec=false&sec_url_var=region1&__uuid=02a08fe7-8154-47a3-89ff-7ccbfa5bdb7e  Posters will be due on Monday 4/22 by 4pm in SE12.  Posters will be displayed on tables in the hallway just outside of the lab.  All BC students will be able to vote for their favorite poster using the ballots and ballot box on one of the tables.  Those who fill out a ballot completely and correctly (including a valid reason for their choice) may receive up to 1 extra credit point.  Voting will end on Thursday 4/25 at 4pm.  Winners of the student votes will receive flash drives or similar prizes and will be featured on my Earth Day web site.  Past winners and celebrations can be viewed off my main web page at http://www2.bakersfieldcollege.edu/dkimball/Earth%20Day%20Celebrations.htm .

By Thursday Evening 5/2 all grades after dropping the lowest lecture quiz, homework, lab, video report and test will be posted.  Any errors must be reported before the final. 

Final Exam (Chapters 1-13) Tuesday 12/9 in  SE12 6:00-7:50 pm.  Please sit every other seat.  Please write your name and section number on your Scantron (Form 882)and your test booklet.  No leaving room until you have finished the test. You may use your Textbook and notes.  All cell phones and other electronic equipment, except calculator, should be turned off and stored out of sight. No sharing of calculators or any other test materials. Please put all non-test materials on the floor or on a seat next to you.  No baseball caps or other eye shield material.  Please keep your hands away from your eyes.  Please keep your papers covered and keep your eyes on your own papers.  Any indication of cheating will result in a zero for the test.  Overall grades should be posted on the internet under "Grades" according to student number by late afternoon after the test.  Please pick up graded work on the front table after the final.  Borderline cases (1% short of a grade) will be decided by the final score.  Those whose final score is above the overall percent will receive the higher grade.  Those with a final score below the overall percent will receive the lower grade.  Those who do not pass the final (50% or above) will receive a failing grade in the class regardless of the number of points.  After the final, only errors since before the final will be considered if reported within 24 hours of the final.  After that all grades are final even with errors.
