1984 Assignment

1984 Homework: One important element in studying literature is the ability to identify and critically examine major themes.  For this assignment, you are asked to identify and explore three major themes found in Orwell’s 1984.

Due: Monday, October 12th.

**Requirements** 

*) Must be typed and in full MLA format.

 *) Must adhere to the “How to write about literature” guidelines covered in class.

 *) Must be mechanically correct.

 *) All answers should include page numbers and specific book references.

**Tasks**

 1) Identify one major theme found in 1984. 

A) Spend several sentences identifying this theme in your own words and discussing its importance to the novel. 

B) Provide at least six specific examples from the book where this theme occurs in some fashion.  These examples must include a direct quote and a parenthetical citations.

4) Of the three themes you have identified, discuss the most important one.  Specifically, I’d like to know why you think this one is the most important to the book.  What is Orwell telling us about humanity and ourselves by his exploration of this theme throughout the novel?  This answer should be at least one fully developed, critical paragraph.
