Journal Entries:

Journal Basics: The following is a list of all journal entries as assigned in class.  Remember, every journal entry must be at least 250 words, typed, double spaced, and unlike homework assignments, all journal entries will be due at the end of the semester.  Unlike some journal entries for English 1A, we WILL grade these on mechanics and punctuation.  Each entry is worth anywhere from 20-50 points--in each entry consider the point total a reflection of how thorough your answer should be...

Note: In all journal entries, direct quotes and textual evidence will help your argument's validity.

Journal 1:   (15 Points for A, 15 Points for B)

A) Using Professor Moton's literary terms (a formalist approach), analyze Walker (p79) and Hurston (72).  Look for a major theme(s) and discuss it's importance on the piece.  This is a great time to prove your knowledge of our literary terms.

B) Compare/Contrast the content (discoveries) of Walker with the content of Hurston.  You may consider the similarities and differences between a work written by Hurston versus a work written about Hurston...

Journal 2: (30 Points)

Select the archetypes of either the "Bad ass" or the "Hoodoo Woman" and trace the character type through the pieces read as of February 9th.  Feel free to use both material cited in class lectures or any information or pieces you wish to include on your own.
