Literature Paper
Below are the details of the class essay. As per our class discussion, this paper must be based upon reading of a novel written by and African-American author. Read the selections below and pick ONE topic to write on. Note all pertinent due dates, steps, and requirements. This paper is worth a total of 200 points.
Topic 1: Ethnic Literature is usually deemed important and survives the test of time due to a crucial theme, literary technique, or historical documentation. Using direct quotes and examples from your novel, tell me how theme, technique, or history make this work acceptable to be studied as literature. Make sure your discussion emphasizes why this work was and is important for us today.
Topic 2: Apply a form of criticism (Marxist, archetypal, feminist, biographical, etc.) to your novel. Explain how looking at the work through the lens of your chosen critical method helps grant a deeper meaning to the work.
Requirements:
*) This paper must be typed, double spaced, and
mechanically correct. If you use a
source outside of your novel, you must include a works cited and full MLA
citation.
*) This paper must 1250-1750 words long (roughly 5-7 pages)
*) You must use several direct quotes and references from
your novel in order to prove an argumentative thesis.
*) One of us must approve your novel, or you will get no credit for the paper.
Due Dates:
Paper Topic/Book Approval: Wed, March 16th. You will turn in a one paragraph discussion of your paper topic. Clearly state your essay’s thesis as well as your topic and the novel you’ve chosen. This paragraph should make it perfectly clear what to expect on your final paper.
Final Paper Due: Wed, April 6th. The final version of your paper is due, free from error.
