Outline Draft, Final Research Paper

Overview: You must submit a formal topic outline for your paper. I expect this to be a thorough outline which shows me your paper structure in some detail. It is likely to be a couple of pages long in order for you to fully outline your paper. This outline is perhaps the most important step of all parts of the writing process; it is also one of the best ways for me to give solid feedback to you before you have your paper written. Please, for your own sake, take this one seriously... (Plus, you'll be submitting a formal outline as a mandatory part of the research paper due pretty soon, so it'd be kind of silly not to just write the thing early and get the points for it anyway!)

This outline is expected to be longer and more thorough than the first outline.  It is worth a total of 20 points.

Note: This outline is more in depth than the outline assignment for paper #1 (and therefore worth more points...). I ask for a longer outline and for you to include direct quotes in it. See the details below before proceeding.

Due: The outline is due on Monday, November 30th.

**Specifics**

1) Formal Outline: This outline must be a formal, topic outline with a full MLA header. You must use the proper heading labels that you find on the bottom of page 133 of NA.  Seriously.  Go look at page 133 right now, so you see what I mean.

2) Length: This outline must be at least two full pages in length, and it must include at least three levels of detail throughout the outline. This is a large paper, so I expect a sufficiently large and detailed outline.

Here is an example of what I mean by three levels of detail:

I. Topic (Level 1)
        A. Sub-topic (Level 2)
                1. Sub-topic (Level 3)

3) Quotes/Citations: I expect to see direct quotes, paraphrases, and parenthetical citations in this outline. When you plan to put a source in the paper, put it here first, word for word. It may seem like a big extra step, but once it's typed here, all you have to do is cut and paste the quotes back in your paper.

4) Thesis Statement: At the very top of the outline, in bold type, you must include a preliminary thesis statement for me. This thesis can change as your paper evolves, but I need to see your current thesis right now...

You must submit a formal, topical outline complete with a clearly labeled thesis statement for your paper.

Due: The outline is due during class time on Tuesday, March 17th in my office in Fine Arts 55.

Specifics:

*) This outline must be a formal, topical outline.  For a discussion of these terms, see WRP page 138-12.  For an example, see page 139.  I would expect that a paper of our length will need an outline about as long as the example on 139-140, or even longer.

*) Like the example outline at the bottom of WRP page 140, you must include a preliminary thesis statement at the top of your outline.

*) A revised, final version of this outline will be included as part of your final paper.

*) This must be submitted in MLA format.
