CHAPTER GRADING
You will be assigned specific concepts from various chapters. Your job will be to lead class discussion in the following areas:
| Definition of the concept, theory, or persuasive strategy (this will be a simple presentation and explanation from the book) | |
| Examination of the concept, etc. within the context of Aristotle's Rhetoric or the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) | |
| Application of the concept, etc. to a real world example. (Not just the book examples) | |
| Delivery (Both verbal and nonverbal) | |
| Questions |
You will be required to stand in front of the audience. For time reasons you do not need to worry about an introduction or conclusion. You may use a visual aid for any section, such as an overhead of the definition for the definition section, or a magazine ad or TV commercial for the application portion.
Time Limit: 2-3:00
Grading Criterion
I will grade you according to how well you present each of the above five areas. Following are the explanations and grading percentages for each section:
| Definition. 10% This is a short portion of the presentation, but very important. Make sure we have heard the book definition. Good idea to put the key terms on a visual aid. Your classmates need this information for the upcoming quiz. | |
| Examination. 30% Aristotle and ELM are key concepts within this book so it is important that you reinforce them with your analysis. You may have to do additional reading in the text to better understand the relationship between your persuasive term and either Aristotle's Rhetoric or ELM. You will only discuss ONE of these concepts. DO NOT DO BOTH. | |
| Application. 30% You need to bring in your own examples to help explain the term/theory you are explaining. For example, if you are explaining the Theory of Reasoned Actions you could tell a story about your don't care attitude toward smoking and how now, at 25, you have been smoking for seven years. The example does not have to be personal, but you need something different from the book examples. | |
| Delivery. 20% I do want you to be looking at us so keep your note cards to a minimum. | |
| Questions.10% You will answer questions or help lead a class discussion. This means you will need to call on people who have questions or to allow other comments. Don't be afraid to admit if you don't know something or had not thought of all ways of examining your topic area. You can also ask me or other people for additional help in answering questions. I expect you to know the basic definition of your term and a simple explanation. |
There are two main objectives for this assignment. The first is to give each person more speaking opportunities and the second is help the class learn more about the persuasion topics through your unique stories and examples.
