SPEECH REQUIREMENTS:
GENERAL INFORMATION
Chapter Presentations. During the course of the semester you will be required to discuss a specific persuasive theory or strategy from one of the first six chapters. You will be assigned this during the time we are discussing the chapter. There will be several presentations during one class time. The basic purposes are:
| to give you an additional speaking opportunity that is not as formal | |
| a chance to lead the class in a small discussion (this is a different type of public speaking situation that you may not get to encounter too often.) | |
| to provide vital information for the chapter quiz |
The Informative Speech: You will learn specific outlines specific for an informative speech and will apply these to explaining a specific topic of your choice. Specifically you will:
| become more comfortable with the basic grading techniques from the first speech (Verbal and Nonverbal) |
| speak 5-6:00 (and questions 1-2:00) | |
| use informative techniques to explain specific information from the text. | |
| learn new outline formats |
The persuasive speech is for you to apply some of the book information in trying to convince us of your particular view of an issue.
| speak for 7-8:00 (and questions 2:00) | |
| use appropriate persuasive techniques from the book to move the audience to accept your point of view. | |
| use the appropriate persuasive outline depending on the audience's needs |
The Final speech is a group presentation in which you will present a finished product about the class theme. You will be working with a group of no more than five total students.
| each person speaks for 4-6:00 | |
| the total presentation is persuasive but some of you may be more informative | |
| your group may use any media (computer, video, posters, handouts, etc.) to deliver your message |

OUTLINE GRADES: All outlines are graded as negative grades. This means you start with the maximum amount of points and then I subtract points from the following areas:
1. Not typed
2. No thesis clearly stated
3. No works cited
4. Not using the proper format. I will give you the appropriate outline formats for each type of speech. You must use one of these formats. These formats are also in the handbook.
See each speech for the specific point deductions.
