SPEECH REQUIREMENTS:
GENERAL INFORMATION
Chapter Presentations. During the course of the semester you will be required to discuss a specific persuasive theory or strategy from one of the first six chapters. You will be assigned this during the time we are discussing the chapter. There will be several presentations during one class time. The basic purposes are:
| to give you an additional speaking opportunity that is not as formal | |
| a chance to lead the class in a small discussion (this is a different type of public speaking situation that you may not get to encounter too often.) | |
| to provide vital information for the chapter quiz |
Your first presentation is an introductory speech in which you will simply tell us about yourself. The three basic purposes of this speech are:
| learning the 2 general areas of speech grading (Verbal and Nonverbal) | |
| being introduced to the basic outlining format | |
| experiencing the public environment (Stand and Deliver) |
The Informative speech continues the basic speech elements you learned in the Introductory speech. You will learn additional outlines specific for an informative speech and will apply these to explaining specific persuasive theories and strategies from the book. Specifically you will:
| become more comfortable with the basic grading techniques from the first speech (Verbal and Nonverbal) |
| speak longer (4-6:00) | |
| use informative techniques to explain specific information from the text. | |
| learn new outline formats | |

| speak for 6-8:00 | |
| use appropriate persuasive techniques from the book to attempt the audience to accept your point of view. | |
| use the appropriate persuasive outline depending on the audience's needs |
