This past summer, Bakersfield College was pleased to select twenty -one of BC’s talented STEM students who have demonstrated high scholastic achievement to award them the A+ Plus Scholarship, funded by the National Science Foundation. BC’s dedicated A+ Plus scholarship committee members responsible for the selection of A+ Plus Scholarship recipients, included Dr. Cooper, Mrs. Goldberg, and Mrs. Wang. The committee members worked long hours to perform a comprehensive examination of all applicants, by carefully reviewing all application documents’ and interviewing all the students who applied.
STEM Students awarded the A + Plus scholarship receive approximately $1,300 every semesters to help them with the cost of their education. In additional to their initial award, students who remain STEM majors and maintain good academic standing can renew their scholarship and receive aid for up to three years while enrolled at BC and for one additional year at a transfer institution. In addition to helping alleviate the burden of the cost of higher education, the A+ Plus Program also promotes academic excellence by providing a positive academic environment for their scholars. A+ Plus scholars are required to attend monthly meetings; through their monthly meeting and other A+ Plus program hosted activities, scholars have the opportunity to network amongst their peers and receive mentorship from the faculty and staff involved with the program.
Joanna Moraza, an A+ Plus Scholar states “…as an A + Plus Scholar, you become more aware of the resources that are available to you. You become more comfortable asking your professors, peers, and other faculty for advice. It’s great to be able to depend on them for help; they really encourage us to take advantage of every opportunity that is out there”. The positive outcomes of the A+ Plus Program are a result of a vibrant collaboration between scholars, faculty mentors and administrative leadership. The A+ Plus Program team is extremely pleased with the success of their students and looks forwards to continue to take part in promoting academic excellence amongst BC’s STEM majors.
