Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) National Conference 2012: Creating a strong network of engineers for the future
The SHPE’s National conference is an event that is highly anticipated by undergraduate engineering students, professional engineers, educators and industry representatives. Every year, this conference provides the perfect platforms for its attendees to network, learn, be inspired and gain valuable tools to succeed in the field of engineering; and this year Bakersfield College’s HOPE club members had the opportunity to attend! SHPE’s 2012 four-day conference began on Wednesday, November 14 and was held in Fort Worth, Texas. The conference offered a diverse list of workshops and fun tours. The tours that were offered included a visit to Johnson & Johnson corporate headquarters and an Intel sponsored luncheon for the Latina Track sequel among others. The workshops accessible to attendees covered a wide variety of topics, such as “Advancing Your Computer Skills,” “The Secret to Getting Hired,” “The Key to Academic Success,” “Engineering and Biotech,” and many more.
A highlight of the conference was the opportunity for engineering students to network with professional engineers and other industry representatives. There were many opportunities to network at SHPE, some of the hosted networking events includedinvite-only luncheons hosted by major companies (several HOPES clubs members received some of this invites!). There were also informational hospitality suites hosted by companies such as Intel Corporation, Turner Construction, Exelon Corporation, among others open to all SHPE attendees. Another place at SHPE where undergraduates and recent graduates had the chance to build professional relationships was at the career fair held on Saturday at the Fort Worth Convention Center; where participating companies had booths set up and ready to receive applicants. Some companies even gave on the spot interviews to qualifying applicants and offered job positions to several students.
The SHPE conference provided the ideal space for engineering students and recent graduates to build professional relationships, learn about the hiring process, meet future colleagues and be inspired. SHPE was an unforgettable experience for all its attendees and the HOPES Club looks forward to attending next year’s conference in Indianapolis. BC students plan to incorporate the knowledge they gained from attending the SHPE 2012 Conference, polish their interviewing skills and work hard to prepare for next years conference!
