Hours given in parentheses are total hours for the course. Hours lecture, lab, etc., are hours required per week usually. Offered: F=course is offered fall semester; S=course is offered spring semester; SS=course is offered summer session. If there is no designation, the course is offered irregularly. MUSC B2 Basic Elements of Music (3 units) (top)
Designed for the student with little or no previous experience in the reading and writing of music. Development of beginning skills, including ear training, notation, and basic elements of music theory. Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in MUSC B16. Recommended: Reading Level 5 or 6. MUSC B4a-B4b Elementary Theory (3-3 units) (top)
A study of common practice harmony. From the construction of scales, modes, and triads to four-part voice-leading and simple modulations. Prerequisite: MUSC B2 or evaluation by instructor of theory fundamentals. 4a: Concurrent enrollment in MUSC B15a; B4b: Concurrent enrollment in MUSC B15b. Recommended: Reading Level 5 or 6. MUSC B4d Intermediate Theory-Contemporary Materials (3 units) (top)
A study of compositional styles and practices since the late 19th century including practical application in composition. Open to students beginning the study of piano. Recommended for students preparing to teach in the elementary grades and for music majors specializing in voice or instruments, other than the piano. Designed to teach the student how to play the guitar. Correct right and left hand technique, how to read guitar music, basic chords, finger-picking and strumming. A suitable acoustic guitar required. MUSC B15a-B15b Ear Training and Sight Singing (1-1 unit) (top)
Basic drill in the singing and recognition of intervals, scales, and diatonic melodies with solfege syllables. Practice in rhythmic, harmonic, and melodic dictation. Extension of melodic sight singing and dictation to include chromatic passing tones and more complex rhythms. Singing and recognition of the basic varieties of triads and seventh chords. Harmonic dictation; recognition of basic chord patterns and cadences. Prerequisites: B15a: Concurrent enrollment in MUSC B4a. B15b: Concurrent enrollment in MUSC B4b.
