Tips on Applying to Summer Research Programs

Pre-Application Suggestions

• Go to the program's website

• Apply to as many programs as possible

• Check to see if you meet "Minimum Qualifications".

• Identify who will write strong letters of recommendation

• Check to see if travel and participation stipends are available

• e-mail the Program Director if you have any questions

Ready to Apply

• Most applications are on-line

• Know the due date(s)

• You may need transcripts

• Get letters of recommendation as early as possible (BE CONSIDERATE)

• I would suggest setting up an e-mail account just for summer programs.
  (example: gmail, hotmail, yahoo...)

Personal Statements and Essay Questions

• Include family background, personal goals, educational goals, leadership experiences, future commitment to underserved populations and interest in your particular science field.

Extracurricular and Community Activities

• Duration and level of involvement is important.

• Student organization or club involvement

• Level of involvement (member vs. officer)

• Short and long term volunteer experiences

• Part-time work employment

• Research experience

• Medically/Science related experience

• Service learning courses

• Service or travel abroad
