STUDENT SUCCESSES

 

Russell Moore has been named Student Honoree for the Woodworking Technology Program this 2010-2011 academic year and as a result will receive an academic scholarship.  Russell has lived in Bakersfield most all of his life with the exception of a two year stint in southern Italy where he served as a missionary.  Russell is a graduate of West High School and is currently a full time employee with AT&T.  Working full time, Russell is also working towards an Associate of Science Degree in Industrial Technology, with an emphasis on Cabinetmaking/Woodworking, here at Bakersfield College.  Russell states that, " I have found woodworking to be an expression of the artistic side of myself that I never really had an opportunity to develop.  The woodworking courses offered at Bakersfield College have helped me to bring out my artistic abilities and combine them with my strengths in mathematics and problem solving".  Russell is an living proof that a motivated person can work full time, enjoy a full and healthy family life and still make time to attend college and perform at a high level.  Look forward to our continued working relationship.

Frank Lauro has been named Student Honoree for the Woodworking Technology Program this 2009-2010 academic year and as a result will receive an academic scholarship.  Frank Lauro is currently with Sempra Energy Utilities here locally.  Frank earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Washington and his M.S. in Engineering from the University of Texas in Austin.  Frank has been involved in taking courses in the Woodworking Technology Program for the past two years.  This semester Frank will complete the Wood B65b Advanced Cabinetmaking course.  During this past academic year Frank has completely built in his home garage, thus effectively turning it into his new woodworking facility.  Frank stated to me "...that woodworking has become a passion for him".  The quality of Frank's work is excellent and through his hard work he continues to carry on the "Tradition of Excellence" that our program has been know for during the past several decades.  Thank you for being such and excellent part of this program and for being a genuinely wonderful person...best of luck in all that you do.

Miguel Del Real has been named Student Honoree for the Woodworking Technology Program this 2008-2009 academic year and as a result will receive an academic scholarship.  Miguel has been a student at Bakersfield College since fall semester 2003 and balancing both a full-time job as well as a full academic load.  Miguel obtained his Associates of Arts degree during the summer of 2007, but is still deciding where his educational journey will lead.  Miguel has taken Wood B1 Creative Woodworking, Wood B2 Furniture and Cabinetmaking and is currently enrolled in Wood B5 Intermediate Cabinetmaking.  Miguel states that "...these classes really have helped me to grow and develop my abilities as an artistic wood worker".  During Miguel's enrollment in the Wood B1 Creative Woodworking course, he began to think seriously about getting into the woodworking technology industry or teaching woodworking himself.  Wherever Miguel's journey leads him, I know that he will be successful ... good luck with your future endeavors and congratulations on your accomplishments.

Matthew Scofield has been named Student Honoree for the Woodworking Technology Program this 2007-2008 academic year and as a result will receive a scholarship in the amount of $200.00.  Matthew was born in Lancaster, California and moved to Tehachapi, California at the age of five years.  At the age of twelve, Matthew started doing landscaping work and odd jobs.  When Matthew reached high school, he enrolled in every Industrial Technology class offered; to include woodworking, stained glass window and welding.  While still in high school, Matthew started remodeling homes for various clients.  To date Matthew has remodeled seven homes to include flooring, electrical, painting and various other repairs.  Matthew started at Bakersfield College in the fall semester of 2007and is working on a double major.  Matthew would like to earn an Associate of Science Degree in Industrial Technology as well as a second Associate of Science Degree in Industrial Technology with an emphasis on Cabinetmaking.  After Bakersfield College, Matthew would like to go to California State University, Fresno and earn a Bachelor  Degree in Industrial Technology.  While attending Bakersfield College Matthew builds fine furniture and cabinetry for people that he knows.  Matthew's ultimate goal to date is to open his own Furniture/Cabinetmaking shop.  Congratulations to you Matthew for all of your fine work and accomplishments to date and the best of luck to you in all of your future endeavors!

David Dmohowski has been named as the student of the year for the Industrial Technology Department this 2006-2007 academic year.  As a result, David will receive a scholarship in the amount of $500.00 and will be publicly recognized at this year's Honor Brunch to be held Friday, May 18, 2007 at 10:30am.  David is a graduate from Garces High School and plans to complete his AS degree here at Bakersfield College in Architecture and then transfer to a university to acquire a degree in Construction Management.  To date David has very successfully completed the Woodworking B2 and B5 courses.

Tim Everton has been named Student Honoree for the Woodworking Technology Program this 2006-2007 academic year and as a result he will receive a scholarship in the amount of $200.00.  As a result of Tim's participation in woodworking courses here at Bakersfield College, he and his partner Michelle Malloy, have opened their own business "For the Love of Wood".  To date Tim and Michelle have completed numerous projects for members of the Bakersfield community.  To date Tim has very successfully completed the Woodworking B2 and B5 courses.
